Stewart Cobine (Stew) has served as associate vice president and chief audit officer since June 2015.
Stew’s previous roles at IU have allowed him to gather extensive business and financial experience and participate in a wide range of compliance-focused activities including accounting, capital finance, financial management, investments, and tax.
Prior to his current assignment, Stew served two years as associate vice president, finance, where his duties included leadership of strategic cross-functional and intercampus committees, project teams, and working groups; evaluation, development, implementation, and measurement of strategic initiatives; and serving as senior policy officer, campus liaison, and internal audit liaison for the senior vice president, CFO, and treasurer.
Stew also served as managing director, capital finance and assistant treasurer, from 2005 until 2014, where his responsibilities included oversight of the university’s $1 billion debt portfolio, long-term financial analysis, evaluation of new and nontraditional financing tools, tax-exempt bond compliance, capital markets disclosure, endowment management, cash and investment accounting/reporting, and debt accounting/reporting. He also managed and coordinated several external audits of the university by the IRS and the Indiana Department of Revenue.
Before joining IU in 1986, Stew had five years of private sector audit experience for clients in banking, construction, nonprofit, and small business sectors.
